Hourly natural gas use depends on generator output, load percentage, engine efficiency and the heating value of the gas. The reliable method is to use the selected model's fuel-consumption curve at the expected load and convert it using the local gas energy content and billing unit. A generic volume-per-hour figure can be misleading because both generator size and gas quality vary.
A natural gas generator can support long-duration operation if the specific engine is rated for that duty, the gas supply remains stable and required maintenance is performed. The project must distinguish standby, prime and continuous ratings. Around-the-clock operation also requires planning for service intervals, cooling, oil consumption and a fuel system that can maintain pressure and flow at full demand.
The main difference is the fuel and its infrastructure. A natural gas generator normally depends on a gas network or approved gaseous-fuel supply, while a diesel generator stores liquid fuel on site. This affects fuel logistics, outage resilience, emissions, maintenance and operating cost. Electrical sizing principles are similar, but engine response and fuel-system requirements should be checked for the chosen technology.
Only if the generator is specifically designed and approved for those fuels. Multi-fuel engines use fuel controls and calibration that accommodate different gaseous or liquid fuels. KJ Power's current category includes a model with natural gas, LPG and gasoline capability, but that should not be assumed for every natural gas generator. Always follow the selected model's approved-fuel list and operating instructions.
Not necessarily. A generator connected to a reliable natural gas utility can receive fuel through the gas line, so a liquid-style fuel storage tank is not required for that operating mode. LPG or other stored gaseous fuels may require approved tanks and vapour or pressure-control equipment. The fuel arrangement depends on the selected fuel, utility availability and local safety requirements.
If gas pressure or flow falls below the engine's required range, the generator may derate, run poorly or shut down depending on its controls and fuel system. For critical backup applications, the project should assess whether the gas supply is likely to remain available during the same emergency that causes the electrical outage. Where that risk is unacceptable, alternative or multi-fuel strategies may be considered if approved by the equipment design.
